So yeah, watching the Colbert Report at the moment. Great guy.
Ah yes, I’m off to a great start.
This is mostly for me (especially because I really don’t know who else would read it), but I’m hoping it encourages me to write something on somewhat of a regular basis.
Alright. So I just finished reading Blaze by Richard Bachman. What a pleasant surprise. I’d been meaning to get my hands on a copy for a while, but I waited until it hit the bargain shelves at B&N. Six bucks and a day and a half later, I’m done and all I can say is wow. Even as a young guy, Stephen King knew how to tell a story.
I wasn’t really expecting a whole lot from it, just a good, quick read to entertain me for a little. I thought it’d be a fun thing to read between more serious stuff, and it was … but it also impressed me. It has a great central character and it’s just really quick, entertaining, and well written. I had a great time, really. It’s like Of Mice and Men written as a pulp crime novel. Good stuff.
There’s a short story by King at the end of the book called Memory and it’s supposedly the genesis for his latest Duma Key. Good story. Made me want to go out and get Duma, but I got too many books in my too read pile at the moment (two of them King books: Lisey’s Story and Wizard and Glass [someday I'll get through that damn series]).
Onto some Stephen Graham Jones next I think. Just got The Bird is Gone and his story collection Bleed into Me. Can’t wait. I’m really getting into his stuff now.
On an entirely different note, I feel like I’m in a bit of a movie slump at the moment. Good stuff in the theaters (Dark Knight, Hellboy, soon to be Pineapple Express and Tropic Thunder), but it’s been tough going for me on the DVD front. I just haven’t been interested lately, which, trust me, is weird for me. I’m the freakin movie guy. I don’t know maybe I just need to see something good. I did watch Oldboy with Nick the other night, and that did rekindle my interest enough to get back on top of my Netflix account. Mmmm … Korean movies. Maybe I’ll have to watch The Host. Awesome stuff. I feel better already.
I was tempted to go into a political rant, but I’m not sure if I’m up for it at the moment. Suffice to say I’ll still vote for Obama. Just because he’s the only shot we got. Although I would like to sit down on a lazy afternoon and share a lemonade with John McCain as he regales me with stories for the 1940s.
